TCP tra c is multifractal : a numerical study

چکیده

The apparent`fractal' properties of TCP data traac have recently attracted considerable interest. Most prominently, fractional Brownian motion (FBM) has been used to model the long range dependence of traac traces through self-similarity. Traac being by nature a process of positive increments, though, a multifractal approach appears more natural. In this study, various traces of TCP traac have been analyzed from both points of view. Though evidence for statistical self-similarity is present in certainàspects' of the traac, the multifractal scaling behavior is much more convincing. Furthermore, crucial LAN speciic characteristics of data traac are revealed by the multifractal analysis (MA) only. TCP traac at Berkeley and at CNET, e.g., looks entirely diierent from a multifractal point of view while showing about the same self-similarity parameter H. As a further example, MA suggests that L evy stable motion is in certain situations a more accurate model than FBM. In conclusion, to consider traac traces as multifractal random measures rather than as (monofractal) self-similar processes is not only more natural but has also various numerical advantages. A novel approach to queueing supports this conclusion.

Multifractal Properties of TCP tra c a numerical study

We analyze two traces of TCP tra c recorded at the gateway of a LAN corre sponding to two hours at Berkeley and to eight hours at CNET labs respectively We are mainly interested in a multifractal approach which we introduce with var ious examples We elaborate on the di erence to mono fractal statistical tests being used so far Though we nd statistical self similarity the data is clearly not mon...

Single source TCP behaviour: a multifractal analysis

As far as we know, three non-mutually exclusive reasons have been given to account for the complex scaling behaviour observed in IP tra c on small time scales, namely: data fragmentation due to protocol layering; complex interactions in the network between tra c ows and data and storage elements; the TCP mechanism. Focusing on the TCP mechanism, we simulated the most important features of a sin...

Multifractal Products of Stochastic Processes: Fluid Flow Analysis

The consideration of multifractal properties in network tra c has become a well-known issue in network performance evaluation. We analyze the performance of a uid ow bu er fed by multifractal tra c described by Norros, Mannersalo and Riedi [1]. We describe speci c steps in uid ow analysis, both for nite and in nite bu er sizes, and point out how to overcome numerical problems. We discuss perfor...

Long-Range-Dependence and Multifractal modeling of vBNS Tra c

In this paper we analyze a number of IP packet level very-high-speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS) tra c traces collected by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR) measurement and analysis group passive monitors at a number of highperformance connection (HPC) sites. Speci cally, we show that the vBNS tra c traces also have long-range...
